The Markhor

Why are they called the Markhor?

Markhor means snake eater.
Mar means snake and khor means eater, so it means snake eater.
There is no evidence that a markhor can actually kill snakes. Since markhors cannot actually kill snakes, maybe they were named snake eater for their horns that look so much like curling snakes.

What the Markhor eats

The Markhor is a herbivore. And eats things like grass and leaves. A markhor’s diet will change depending on what season it is. In the winter they will start feeding on evergreen trees, and high growing leaves. In the spring and summer they will feed on soft shoots and fruit, and graze. Markhors will also eat flowers all year round or just whenever they can find them

Markhor Location and Population

Markhors are found in the mountain areas of Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. There are around 5,800 Markhors left in the wild. They live on steep mountain cliffs which makes it harder to be caught.
